A routine audit from the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) can happen at almost any time. Whether you manage a retail store in Belfast, a production plant in Ballymena, or a hospitality venue in Derry~Londonderry, inspectors have broad powers under the Fire Safety (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 to audit your site and inspect your compliance documentation.
While NIFRS officers aim to keep local workplaces safe, discovering major oversights during an inspection can quickly lead to formal Enforcement Notices, statutory fines, or immediate Prohibition Notices that shut your doors until issues are fixed.
In most cases, failed audits stem from small, avoidable red flags in your Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) and safety routines.
Here are five of the most common issues NIFRS inspectors flag across Northern Ireland—and how to ensure your business passes with flying colors.
1. Fire Doors Wedged Open or Unserviced
Fire doors are engineered life-safety barriers designed to contain heat and smoke for at least 30 minutes. During site walk-throughs, inspectors frequently catch businesses wedging fire doors open with wooden blocks, fire extinguishers, or heavy boxes for convenience.
Additionally, fire doors with missing intumescent seals, damaged self-closers, or gaps exceeding 4mm around the frame will fail inspection instantly.
2. An Assessment That Doesn't Reflect the Physical Layout
If your Fire Risk Assessment was written five years ago and your building layout has changed since, your assessment is legally invalid. Inspectors cross-reference your written document against the physical premises. Unrecorded partition walls, converted storage spaces, altered escape paths, or secondary mezzanine levels will trigger an immediate compliance action point.
3. Incomplete Fire Safety Logbooks
An inspector will always ask to see your Fire Safety Logbook. Verbal assurances that testing is happening mean nothing without recorded proof. Missing regular entries for:
Weekly fire alarm call point tests
Monthly emergency lighting flicker tests
Monthly fire extinguisher visual checks
Bi-annual or annual professional system maintenance certificates
...will be flagged as a direct failure of your management duties under the Order 2006.
4. Blocked Fire Exit Routes & Obstructed Final Exits
Corridors, stairwells, and final exit doors must remain completely clear of obstructions at all times. Common red flags include stock boxes stacked in exit corridors, waste bins placed in front of emergency doors, or external fire exits locked with key-operated padlocks while staff are inside the building.
5. Untrained Staff and Lack of Fire Warden Coverage
Having perfect physical equipment is useless if your staff do not know what to do when the alarm sounds. NIFRS officers frequently ask employees simple questions about evacuation paths, assembly points, and who their designated Fire Wardens are. If staff appear un-trained or warden rotas leave gaps on certain shifts, your inspection rating will suffer.
